Laptops

Well, you knew this was coming, I'll be getting a new laptop around December or November. Today I spent a good amount of time looking at two options (i.e. the options that my father could use his company discount on), a Dell Inspiron 1720 and a HP dv9500t notebook. About a year back I was looking at an Asus machine, and while I do like them still (and my boyfriend will be getting one anyway *jealous*) I don't think I'll end up with one.

It looks like we're leaning toward the HP (better discount, better price) even though my current one is a HP. Well, they did change the power adapter plug so perhaps I'll have better luck with the dv9500t. We're also considering getting a 3 year warrenty instead of the very limited 1 year or 90 days one that's included in the price, y'know just in case.

So this is basic comparison shopping, materials and prices are likely to change in the next 4 months but it's a good idea of what I can expect and I'm very glad I get to work with my father instead of letting him handle it all.

If anyone wants me to post the specs that I'm looking at, let me know.

Do you have any good laptop advice?
What experiances with Dell or HP laptops do you have (recent ones)?

I'd like to hear any opinions on the matter as I still have time to choose.

I have an Compaq Presario (which is made by HP). My vote would be for the HP. I also had to replace the power jack, but I guess that is a very common thing to go out on laptops.

What's the model for your Compaq? I know a few Presario's share the same type of multi-pin jack as my Pavilion.

Hi there. Thought I'd give you my take on my laptop. I have an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC (I think its the 6000 series) that I purchased brand new, customized in January, arrived to me at the end of Jan.

I love it. I mean absolutely love it. And prior to this one, the experiences I had were with a earlier model of HP Pavillion (my main work laptop at my old job) a Toshiba Satellite (which was what I really wanted until this one arrived), Alienware, and a Dell Inspiron that I used at work a few times. The only one that did not need a powerjack replaced was my work Pavillion and the Alienware, but it is primarily a gaming laptop so probably not what you are looking for anyway.

I absolutely love my HP and my husband is getting ready to purchase a laptop for himself. He will also be purchasing the HP Pavillion because he loves mine.

We have not had to replace ANYTHING on my laptop since January, which I realize is only 9 months, but still - nothing has been wrong with it.

The only snag I have ever had with this laptop, was not acutally with the laptop itself. It was that it came Vista compatible and I went ahead and installed Vista when HP sent me a copy. I hated Vista and it made a lot of my normal everyday programs not run (I am a writer and use a lot of different writing software and photography software). At first I liked Vista but after a week, I hated it. I uninstalled it and the laptop has been perfect ever since. (again - not a related "laptop" issue per say)

I didn't realize the one you had a problem with was a Pavillion, until I read your comment here. So I guess I am just surprised since nothing has been wrong with mine. How long have you had it? I am starting to think that the power jack thing is a problem with many different brands of laptops, since we don't regularly unplug a computer over and over, maybe that just loosens something? I don't know. Again, hasn't happened to me yet.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my two cents with you to help you make a decision.

Good luck, I know its hard to make a huge purchase like that and wonder if you're making the right one.

Nicole, I've had my Pavilion for a little over 2 years and I really didn't have any problems with it until about...7 months ago I'd say. I am rather happy with HP in general, so I don't feel too paranoid about purchasing another laptop from them.

I've heard from two other friends that had to manually replace their power jacks. One had a Toshiba and the other a Compaq.

I also want to add that my computer has been making a very disturbing scratching sound for a while now, so the power adapter port isn't the only thing wrong with it.

I'm rather jealous that you got an Alienware PC :P. I do enjoy gaming quite a bit, and I like how gaming PCs have great graphics cards which is very important to me (serious Photoshopper here).

What's your issue with Vista? I'm a little tentative about switching over from XP, so I like hearing both sides of the issue.
